Adaptive Taekwondo for Children & Individuals with Special Needs in Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Every Student Deserves the Opportunity to Grow

At Resilient Martial Arts & Fitness in Rancho Cucamonga, California, we believe martial arts should be accessible, welcoming, and adaptable to individuals with different abilities and learning needs.

Who Can Participate in Adaptive Taekwondo?

Every student is unique. Our Adaptive Taekwondo program may be appropriate for individuals with a variety of developmental, learning, communication, sensory, or motor needs, including individuals with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • ADHD
  • Intellectual or developmental disabilities
  • Down syndrome
  • Developmental delays
  • Communication challenges
  • Social or behavioral challenges
  • Motor coordination difficulties
  • Sensory differences
  • Other special needs

Before a student begins, our team takes time to learn about their strengths, needs, communication style, interests, abilities, and individual goals.

This helps us determine an appropriate starting environment and instructional approach.

Individualized Adaptive Taekwondo Instruction

Traditional martial arts classes are not always the best learning environment for every student.

Some students may benefit from additional repetition, shorter instructions, visual demonstrations, modified exercises, extra transition time, individual encouragement, more frequent breaks, one-on-one support, or a quieter learning environment.

Our instructors can adapt Taekwondo activities and teaching methods according to the student's abilities and needs.

Progress is measured by the individual student's development—not by comparison with other students.

What Can Students Practice Through Adaptive Taekwondo?

Focus & Following Directions

Taekwondo provides a structured environment where students have opportunities to practice listening, responding to instructions, completing activities, and transitioning from one task to another. Instructions and activities can be modified to meet the student's individual learning style.

Self-Control & Emotional Regulation

Martial arts emphasizes patience, respect, controlled movement, routines, and appropriate responses. Within the structure of class, students may have opportunities to practice waiting, taking turns, following routines, completing structured activities, and requesting breaks when needed.

Physical Activity

Adaptive Taekwondo provides a fun, structured opportunity

for students to move, stretch, exercise, and participate

in martial arts activities. Exercises can be modified to provide an appropriate level of participation for each student.

Communication & Social Interaction

Depending on the student's individual goals and abilities, Adaptive Taekwondo classes may provide opportunities to practice:

  • Greeting instructors and classmates
  • Responding to questions or directions
  • Asking for help
  • Taking turns
  • Working with a partner
  • Respecting personal space
  • Participating in group activities
  • Encouraging classmates

One-on-One & Small Group Adaptive Taekwondo

We understand that every student has different needs. Depending on the student's abilities, comfort level, and goals, instruction may be offered in different formats.

Private / One-on-One Adaptive Taekwondo

ndividualized Taekwondo instruction allows an instructor to work closely with the student while adjusting the pace, teaching methods, exercises, communication, and level of support.

Private instruction may be especially helpful for students who need additional repetition, fewer distractions, individualized guidance, or additional time before participating in group activities.

Small Group Adaptive Taekwondo

Small-group instruction gives students an opportunity to practice Taekwondo while also participating alongside peers. Depending on individual abilities, students may have opportunities to practice turn-taking, communication, personal space, partner activities, and positive peer interaction. As students develop greater familiarity, confidence, and independence, appropriate students may also have opportunities to participate in larger group activities.

Adaptive Taekwondo for Regional Center & Self-Determination Program Families

Resilient Martial Arts & Fitness welcomes families receiving services through California Regional Centers and individuals participating in California's Self-Determination Program (SDP).

Participants in the Self-Determination Program may have individualized goals and service plans. Our team can speak with families and members of their support team to help determine whether Adaptive Taekwondo may align with the participant's goals and needs.

Depending on an individual's plan, authorization, and applicable program requirements, Adaptive Taekwondo services may potentially qualify for funding through Self-Determination resources.

Funding is not guaranteed. Families should confirm eligibility, funding availability, service codes, and authorization requirements with their Regional Center, Independent Facilitator, Financial Management Service (FMS), or another appropriate member of their planning team before beginning services.

Our Adaptive Martial Arts Teaching Philosophy

Patience

Some students need additional time, repetition, or encouragement. We respect each student's learning pace.

Structure

Consistent routines and clear expectations can help students understand what is happening and what comes next.

Positive Reinforcement

We recognize effort, participation, persistence, and individual progress—not simply perfect performance.

Individualization

Students don't all learn in the same way. We adjust our approach based on the student's abilities and learning needs whenever appropriate.

Respect

Every student deserves to be treated with dignity, patience, and respect and to have meaningful opportunities to participate.

Progress at Your Own Pace

Success in Adaptive Taekwondo can look different for every student.

For one student, success may mean learning and completing an entire Taekwondo form.

For another, it may mean participating for ten minutes, following a two-step direction, waiting for a turn, trying a new movement, working alongside another student, or independently saying, "I need a break."

Every one of these can represent meaningful progress.

At Resilient Martial Arts & Fitness, every achievement matters.

What Does an Adaptive Taekwondo Class Look Like?

Because instruction is individualized, sessions may look different from student to student. An Adaptive Taekwondo class may include:

  • Greeting and class routine
  • Warm-up and stretching
  • Balance and coordination activities
  • Basic Taekwondo movements
  • Kicking and blocking exercises
  • Target practice
  • Focus and direction-following activities
  • Partner or social activities when appropriate
  • Cool-down activities
  • Positive feedback and review

Activities, pacing, level of support, and class length may be adjusted according to the student's needs.

Start With an Individual Adaptive Taekwondo Consultation

Before enrollment, we encourage parents, caregivers, or participants to speak with our team so we can learn more about the student's needs and goals. During the initial conversation, we may discuss the student's:

  • Age
  • Communication style
  • Current abilities
  • Behavioral or sensory considerations
  • Previous experience with sports or group activities
  • Areas where additional support may be helpful
  • Family and participant goals
  • Regional Center or Self-Determination Program information, when applicable

From there, we can recommend an appropriate starting format, such as individualized instruction or a small-group environment.

Every Achievement Matters

A first kick

Following a new direction

Waiting for a turn

Participating alongside another student

Finishing an entire class

Earning a new belt

Progress looks different for everyone, and we are here to recognize and celebrate every step.
